What could a police officer do to me if I forgot to turn my lights on?

In North Carolina it's just an infraction. A ten dollar fine. Everyone forgets to do it occasionally. One of the main reasons though that experienced law enforcement officers will stop people for that is lots of people who are too drunk to drive forget to turn their lights on.
